“Teach for Change” is an innovative program of Sindh Education Foundation Govt. of Sindh which was benchmarked on the Teach for Pakistan Program. The Program entails professional engagement of fresh, qualified and motivated youth to bring about a change in the quality of teaching-learning process in the schools through subject-specific teaching support in Mathematics, Science & English as well as mentoring of teachers with an overarching objective of school improvement.
Objective
“Teaching Support Associates" in the Teach for Change initiative work at the Foundation Assisted Schools in a cooperative and collaborative manner both with the management as well as the teaching faculty and help raise the standard of education in accordance with the overall vision of the Foundation and the Government of Sindh.
In the first phase (Academic Year 2016-17), the Foundation engaged a third party namely M/s BPS Pvt. Ltd. and was able to hire Teaching Support Associates (TSAs) from across Sindh. The professional engagement of the Teaching Support Associates (TSAs) is spanned over a period of 02 years and they are initially offered a one-year contract, to be renewed for another year based on their performance.
Another 300 potential schools are lined up for the second phase to be initiated in 2019-20.
Impact of Teaching Support Associates in Schools
Teaching Support Associates play the role of change agents, contributing to changing conventional teaching methodologies and student engagement. They teach at classroom level with focus on English, Maths, and Science, prepare lesson plans, and use Technology for a strong transfer of conceptual knowledge. Moreover, they work on the capacity building and mentorship of teachers for sustaining the academic improvement in line with the SEF’s overall quality framework. On administrative side, they track the students’ performance, lesson plans and activities, and help the subject teachers and Head Teachers in adapting to the changing roles of teachers in schools.
Collaborative efforts of Foundation, School Partners, Teaching Support Associates and Teachers have brought visible improvement in students’ assessment result of 2018, improvement in enrolment, and around 130 students enrolled at TSA deployed schools qualified for the scholarships to prestigious institutions (e.g. A. Q. Khan Schools, NJV High School, Public Schools etc.)
